Tips on Taking Care of the Mouth When You’re Stressed

Posted .

It’s natural to feel stressed at certain times of your life, especially when you have fights with loved ones, struggle financially, or even prepare for the holidays. Stress is a common problem in the everyday life. Unfortunately, stress can take a toll on your smile, which is when you need to be careful. If you’re not careful, your oral health can suffer the consequences, especially because stress can cause bruxism (teeth grinding and jaw clenching), canker sores, jaw pain, and even gum disease. So, it’s important to take care of the mouth when you’re stressed. Our dentist, Dr. Catherine Boenitz, recommends doing so by doing the following things:

First, get physical. Exercise, like running, riding the bike, lifting weights, and doing yoga, can help you relieve the stress and tension you feel. Massage and physical therapy can also help. So, get outside and get active!

Second, rest and have a balanced diet. Make sure you eat at least three healthy meals a day. This can give your body the fuel it needs to deal with the stress. If you’re a stress eater, make sure to only snack on foods that are friendly to the teeth. When it comes to resting, make sure to get plenty of sleep. If you need to, take a nap during the day! Sleep can help you relax. You can also try meditation to ease your mind and relieve the stress.

Third, share your feelings. Oftentimes sharing your feelings with a loved one can help you deal with the stress. Not only will this lift the heavy weight off your shoulders, but it might also help you solve the problems you have. Your loved one might have some advice that can help you.
