Sealants

Sealants

Sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. They protect the teeth from decay. They are especially beneficial when decay is just beginning before the tooth has developed deep grooves. Molars and premolars, and sometimes the biting surfaces of the back teeth, are the most likely to benefit from sealants.

Benefits of Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are one of the best ways to prevent cavities. Sealants are nearly invisible plastic coatings that do not hamper the aesthetic appearance of the patient. They act as a barrier protecting the teeth from plaque and acids. Dental sealants can last up to five years, and they can be reapplied.

Many patients undergoing orthodontic treatment can benefit from dental sealants. This includes patients wearing braces, as well as patients getting braces. It is also helpful for patients who are taking medications to control seizures and other medical conditions that cause dry mouth, such as diabetes, as they are at an increased risk of developing cavities.

Patients who have fillings or crowns in their teeth can benefit from dental sealants. They can help keep these fillings or crowns clean, which can help prevent cavities.

Procedure for Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are applied to the teeth after a thorough cleaning. A special laser is used to remove debris and plaque from the teeth. The teeth are then rinsed and dried. The sealant is then painted onto the teeth, where it bonds to the surface of the tooth. The sealant coats the deep grooves and ridges of the teeth, creating a smooth surface.  The liquid is hardened and creates a barrier between the tooth enamel and acids.

Aftercare for Sealants

After receiving sealants, patients can brush their teeth as they normally would. They should refrain from chewing on hard candies or ice, as well as eating sticky foods, such as caramels or taffy. These foods and candies can dislodge sealants. Patients should also refrain from using any tobacco products.
