At Bee Family Dentistry, we have seen firsthand how cavities can devastate a smile, and we want to help our patients in San Antonio, Texas, and the surrounding communities have the best possible cavity-fighting strategies. When it comes to cavities, dental plaque is the culprit which can take down your oral health.

Plaque is caused by a buildup of sugars which release harmful acids that attack tooth the enamel. As the plaque wears down the enamel, small holes begin to form (a cavity), exposing the more sensitive layer of dentin and eventually tooth pulp, if left untreated.

The good news is, there are things you can actively do to prevent cavities from developing. Let’s take a look!

— You can implement a diligent oral hygiene routine. This includes brushing at least twice each day, for two minutes each time. Follow up with flossing between teeth and along the gumline at least once each day.

— You can supplement your daily flossing and brushing by rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash.

— Make sure to use proven products that are both safe and effective. This means looking for products that carry the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

— Be sure to keep all scheduled professional dental cleanings and checkups so we can remove hardened plaque and spot cavities when they are still small and easily treated.

— Limit regular consumption of foods that can erode tooth enamel, including sugary and starchy foods and acidic beverages.
