Crowns

Crowns

A dental crown is a dental restoration that covers a damaged, decayed, or unattractive tooth. The crown encases the entire tooth, providing strength and stability.

At Bee Family Dentistry, we use the strongest and most esthetic type of crown material, all-porcelain. Types include Zirconia and Emax crowns for superior esthetics with no metal underlayer, as used in the past. Gold crowns can be fabricated by request.

Benefits of Crowns

Dental crowns are customized tooth caps that can cover a damaged tooth. The crown, which is made from tooth-colored materials, can strengthen a tooth and protect it from further damage.

Crowns are used for various reasons in dentistry. A crown can improve the appearance of a tooth, restore a tooth’s function, and restore its structure following root canal therapy.

Crowns are also used to anchor a dental bridge in place. They are also beneficial when patients grind their teeth at night, often causing their teeth to chip or break.

Dental Crown Procedure

The dentist initiates the dental procedure for crowns after an initial consultation which includes a detailed examination of the patient's oral health. This includes a dental exam and X-rays, which help obtain an accurate image of the patient's teeth.

Next, the dentist removes the decayed portion of the tooth and then shapes it to prepare it for the dental crown. An impression of the tooth will be taken and used for the fabrication of the customized dental crown. Once the crown is ready, it is permanently attached to the tooth.

Aftercare for Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a semi-permanent restoration that should last for many years. However, the crown can still get damaged or worn under extreme pressure. In such cases, the dentist will either repair it or replace it. By keeping up with your regular dental exams, you allow the dentist to spot potential problems early and repair or replace the crown before more damage occurs.

To prevent breaking or fracturing your crown, you should avoid eating sticky and hard foods or biting on hard items like ice. In addition, if you grind your teeth, you should discuss with the dentist about the benefits of customized nightguards.
